A selection of Bulgarian wines, especially from the Thracian Plain wine region.
A selection of Bulgarian wines, especially from the Thracian Plain wine region. Mainly red wines from small family wineries and large enterprises with foreign capital and know-how. They are united by quality and interesting taste, which we test conscientiously. Here you will find wines of world-famous varieties grown all over the world, such as Cabernet Sauvignon or Merlot, but also specific Bulgarian varieties such as Mavrud or Dimiat. Aging in oak barrels is standard. Most of the wines are dry.
The wine-making tradition in Bulgaria goes back to the ancient Thracians, who consumed wine in abundance. Their southern neighbours at the time, the ancient Greeks, were not exactly picky about the Thracians' renowned drinking, and were also shocked by the fact that the Thracians, unlike them, drank wine undiluted with water. And it was in Thrace, today's southern Bulgaria, that the cult of the god Dionysus was born. If you are curious about what this undiluted ancient wine was like, try the purely local Mavrud, which is one of the oldest wine varieties ever.
