Thanks to the relatively strong insulating space created by the brushing of the material, Karandila blankets are truly very warm. Although it is the usual sheep's wool and not fine merino wool, it really is a supremely soft blanket, pleasant to the touch. The Karandila is also suitable for possible bed linen, giving you a cosy blanket to sleep on. Easy handling of the Karandila is also helped by the fact that it has only very short fringes, so it does not deform in the bedding.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThese blankets are made in a small weaving mill in the Stara Planina mountain range, which is also known by its historical name Haemus or Balkan. This steep mountain range stretches for several hundred kilometres from eastern Serbia across Bulgaria to the Black Sea. It is a famous wool area. Until recently, shepherds of the Karakachan ethnic group used to travel here seasonally. Their flocks of sheep, often of exceptional breeds, were renowned throughout the whole Bulgaria. To this day, the Greek-speaking Karakachani are the only stable source of dark wool for our producers. Blankets are made in family-run workshops in Stara Planina, often in remote villages, which is also the case for our producer. The wool used to weave Karandil comes from local small farms and only environmentally friendly practices are used in its processing and the weaving itself. For example, the last stage of production - washing the blankets - takes place in large funnel-shaped wooden vessels built by the mountain streams. Fast-flowing water is fed into them from a race and the blankets, which spin and rub together for hours, are thoroughly washed without the use of detergents.\u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cbr\u003eWash cold or at a maximum of 30 °C, preferably on the wool programme, preferably using a wool detergent containing lanolin. If you are not sure whether your washing machine can wash wool products sensitively, we recommend hand washing. Even coarser blankets will soften somewhat after washing. Do not bleach or tumble dry the blankets. They can be dry-cleaned and ironed, but the temperature of the iron must not exceed 110 °C. In general, it is not recommended to wash woollen products too often, as wool gradually loses its natural properties and abilities during washing. It is recommended to air out wool blankets and carpets frequently in the fresh air, which both restores the natural qualities of the wool fibre and prevents moths.
